Respiratory Module

The Respiratory Module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying the student’s basic science knowledge to the pathophysiology of scenario-based respiratory problems and their treatment. Basic science correlates to clinical medicine include:

1. Cellular respiration as it relates to cellular function in aerobic and anaerobic states
2. Partial pressures of gasses in the atmosphere
3. Diffusion of O₂ and CO₂ between the vascular and intracellular environments
4. Physiology of CO₂ as a trapped (dissolved) gas in the body, and Henry’s Law
5. Bicarb as a buffer in the body, and the relevance of the carbonic acid equilibrium
6. Mechanics of breathing
7. The effect of air movement as the caliber of a conduit (airway) changes
