2. Cellular energy needs and how they harness necessary chemical energy
3. Cellular physiology and specifically cellular respiration in aerobic and anaerobic states
4. The effect low blood perfusion has on cellular function

The DKA module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying the student’s basic science knowledge to the pathophysiology of a patient scenario of diabetic ketoacidosis and its treatment. A few basic science correlates to clinical medicine include:

1. Types of transport mechanisms across the cell membrane
2. Facilitated transport across a cell membrane
3. The role of glucose transporters in getting glucose into cells
4. How and where insulin is produced
5. The effect of insulin on various glucose transporters and its role as a regulatory hormone

The EBM module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying the student’s basic science knowledge to scenario-based processes of diagnosis and treatment of disease, and risk of disease. A few basic science correlates to clinical medicine:

1. Mean, variance, and standard deviation
2. Statistical significance
3. Sensitivity and Specificity
4. Positive and Negative Predictive Values
5. Risk Ratio and Odds Ratio

The Integ module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying the student’s basic science knowledge to the pathophysiology and treatment of two scenario-based dermatologic conditions: acne and burn. A few basic science correlates to clinical medicine include: 1. Anatomy and physiology of the skin 2. The role of the skin in protecting the body and regulating aspects, such as temperature by regulating blood flow to the skin and engaging sweat glands 3. Role in maintaining homeostasis in the body 4. Pathophysiology of acne and how it is reversed with treatment

The Renal – Acid/Base module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying their basic science knowledge to the pathophysiology of scenarios of acid/base disorders and the body’s compensatory mechanisms. A few basic science correlates to clinical medicine include:

1. Basic anatomy and physiology of the kidney
2. The effect of hydrostatic and oncotic pressures on glomerular filtration
3. The effect buffers have on pH of solutions
4. Bicarb as a buffer and the carbonic acid equilibrium
5. How the body maintains a stable pH and a homeostatic environment

The Respiratory Module provides experiential education for pre-health professions students by applying the student’s basic science knowledge to the pathophysiology of scenario-based respiratory problems and their treatment. A few basic science correlates to clinical medicine include:

1. Cellular respiration as it relates to cellular function in aerobic and anaerobic states
2. Partial pressures of gasses in the atmosphere
3. Diffusion of O₂ and CO₂ between the vascular and intracellular environments
4. Physiology of CO₂ as a trapped (dissolved) gas in the body, and Henry’s Law
5. Bicarb as a buffer in the body, and the relevance of the carbonic acid equilibrium
